Registry Settings for Windows Version

Certain features in the utility require searching through the registry. This section indicates the location in the registry where the utility searches to determine the port number for NCR–USB protocols.

Automatically detecting Virtual Port for NCR-USB protocol

This feature automatically detects which virtual serial port the NCR-USB protocol is linked. Note that using NCR–USB requires the installation of IONetworks. IONetworks writes to a certain area in the registry the virtual serial port that it uses. It is similar in most Windows OS, except for Windows 98. The location for Windows OS in general can be found at the following:

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\
EdgeSer\Parameters\<SerialNumber>

Key Name: ComSetup

For Windows 98, the location is as follows:

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\IONetworks\Edgeport_4\Device_<SerialNumber>

Key Name: ComSetup

Note

The serial number is dependent on the serial number or identifier. In most cases, it is D78XX101. However, this can be changed. Hence, the variable <SerialNumber>.

Retrieving the list of available serial ports

This feature retrieves the list of available serial ports on a particular system. This is especially used for automatically detecting the COM port used for connecting to the scanner for the RS‑232 protocol.

The location where the list of serial ports can be found is as follows:

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\SERIALCOMM
